RMWB launches new Age-Friendly Work Plan

An updated vision for active aging in Wood Buffalo was launched on Friday with the release of the new Wood Buffalo Age-Friendly Work Plan at the Golden Year’s Society.

Seniors, Elders, community partners and members of RMWB Council were present at the launch of the plan, which highlights goals, proposed actions, and strategic partners for each identified local priority.

“The launch of the Wood Buffalo Age-Friendly Work Plan marks an important milestone in our collective commitment to ensuring older adults can age with dignity, independence, and connection,” said Patricia Scantlebury-MacInnis, Chairperson of the Advisory Committee on Aging (ACoA). “This plan reflects the priorities of our community and provides a clear path to continued action and progress.”

2026-2030 plan builds on the eight age-friendly domains

The goals and actions outlined in the 2026-2030 Age-Friendly Work Plan are built around eight interconnected “domains” identified by the World Health Organization as affecting quality of life as people age. These include the following:

• Communication and Information 
• Community Support and Health Services
• Social Participation
• Respect and Social Inclusion
• Civic Participation and Employment
• Outdoor Spaces and Buildings
• Transportation
• Housing

An age-friendly community means benefits for everyone

The Municipality was officially recognized as an age-friendly community in 2024 by the World Health Organization, the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta. 

An age-friendly community optimizes health, participation, and security opportunities for older adults, enhancing quality of life for people of all ages.

This means the community adapts its structures and services to be accessible and inclusive of older adults and people with varying needs and capacities. 

Addressing the needs of Elders and older adults in Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo creates a community that is friendlier to all ages.
