RMWB moving to make landfill drop-off free for residential garbage

Council has taken an important step to make residential garbage drop-off free at the landfill, which would take effect once the Fees, Rates and Charges Bylaw is amended in the coming weeks.  

Council passed a motion at its Aug. 25 meeting directing RMWB administration to bring forward a bylaw amendment which, once approved by Council, will allow free disposal of residential garbage at the landfill.  

In the near future, residents can dispose of all household waste free of charge – up to 500 kg per day per license plate. This includes items that currently carry a fee, as well as materials from the annual big bin event, heavy item pickup, and household hazardous waste.  

This decision is intended to encourage proper disposal of garbage at the landfill, discourage illegal dumping, reduce litter cleanup costs and keep neighbourhoods cleaner. 

The motion also directs RMWB administration to bring forward Community Standards Bylaw amendments to increase penalties for littering. In addition, it authorizes the Mayor to engage with the Government of Alberta and advocate for enhanced cleanup and maintenance of provincial highways leading into and through the region.  

Landfill disposal fees still in effect for now 

At this time, the $15 disposal fee and all other applicable disposal fees remain in effect until the Fees, Rates and Charges Bylaw is formally amended in upcoming Council meetings.  

Residential waste over 200 kg continues to be charged at $105 per tonne. Commercial fees remain in effect and are not subject to future changes.
