Together as a Community: 10-Year Horse River Wildfire Anniversary
Join the gathering at Doug Barnes Cabin in Thickwood on May 3 from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.
Community members are invited to join together for a gathering to recognize the 10-year anniversary of the Horse River Wildfire. While this date brings mixed emotions for many, it’s also a time to recognize the strength of the community and how far we have come together.
“Ten years later, we still carry the memories of those days, but we also carry the spirit, strength and togetherness that got us through them. We should be proud of how we supported each other then, and how we continue to show up for one another today,” says Mayor Sandy Bowman. “While we know that everyone will reflect in their own way, this gathering is an opportunity to pause, remember and look ahead with optimism.”

A decade of growth – stronger communities and forward momentum
Over the past ten years, we’ve come together as a community to rebuild, evolve and keep the region moving forward. A few highlights of the region’s progress since 2016 include:
- More people are calling Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo home. The 2025 Census reported population growth for the first time in ten years.
- The region is attracting significant investment and continues to be a key economic driver for Alberta and Canada. Visit fmwb.ca to learn more.
- A new Municipal Development Plan is in place that is guiding growth and work to build stronger communities. Managing disaster risk is a key component of the plan.
- Community Emergency Management Plans for every community were refined and strengthened from the lessons learnt in 2016.
- Since 2017, FireSmart vegetation management has been completed over 400 hectares to reduce the risk of wildfires. Visit rmwb.ca/FireSmart to learn more about FireSmart initiatives.
- A Wildfire Mitigation Strategy has been developed that continues to guide work to reduce the wildfire risk in the region.
