Community Cleanup

Community Cleanup is closed for 2025. Thank you to all the volunteers!

Community Cleanup

Individuals, organizations, schools, sport groups and workplaces can participate.

Adopt-A-Trail

Maintain an adopted area by completing a minimum of four cleanups between May and September.

What's the difference between Community Cleanup and Adopt-A-Trail?

Community Cleanup allows volunteers to sign up for one (or more!) cleanup sessions in neighbourhoods, playgrounds, parks and trails throughout the summer. Cleanup kits are provided and can include gloves, picker sticks and garbage/recycling bags.

Adopt-A-Trail encourages groups or individuals to commit to four cleanup sessions throughout the summer to improve a section of trail or greenspace on municipal property. These sections can range from half a kilometer to three kilometers in length. Groups that take part in two consecutive years receive recognition signage as a thank you!

I live in a rural community. How do I register?

You can register online or by contacting your local municipal office.

Tips for conducting a safe cleanup

  • Be prepared, be safe - it is recommended that all volunteers wear gloves, high visibility clothing, utilize litter picking sticks and do not clean after dark.
  • Do not wear headphones.
  • Assess the area and look for possible hazards and dangers.
  • Have enough supervisors for the group. The lead volunteer should follow any children so that they are always visible.
  • Sort cleanup supplies to ensure garbage and recycling are collected separately.
  • Pack additional safety supplies (e.g., first aid kit, phone, emergency contacts, sunglasses, water, snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray).

  • While driving or walking within your cleanup location, please use identified street crossings and only cross roadways when necessary.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings for vehicular traffic.
  • Do not pick up debris on roadways, highways or medians and face traffic when litter picking.
  • Be aware - watch your footing.
  • The youngest participants in your group should work closest to the fence line and furthest from road surfaces.
  • Adults should always work between the edges of the pavement and young participants.
  • Do not touch, disturb or pick up any items you are unsure of, such as needles, syringes, or chemical and pesticide containers. Report them to PULSE immediately by calling 780-743-7000 or toll free at 1-800-973-9663.
  • Know and apply proper lifting techniques.

  • Plan for the day and check the weather forecast.
  • Dress to weather conditions and wear clothing and protective equipment designed to reduce heat stress. Minimize physical activity in hot weather conditions. Know the signs of heat stress. Take breaks and hydrate when needed.
  • Schedule activities at times less likely to experience thunderstorms, such as the morning. Watch skies for developing thunderstorms and listen for thunder. If caught outdoors far from shelter, avoid tall objects, including trees, poles, wires, and fences. Get to a safe place. Do not resume outdoor activities until at least 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder is heard.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings and be aware of wildlife.

  • The bag left should be anchored or full enough so that it cannot blow away. Full garbage bags are to be tied up and left far enough off the edge of the pavement or sidewalk, so they do not interfere with traffic or pedestrians.
  • Wash your hands.
  • Please report your bags by visiting www.rmwb.ca/cleanup click the report a bag function or by calling PULSE at 780-743-7000 or toll free at 1-800-973-9663 and a municipal representative will arrange disposal.
  • Please ensure that only the picker sticks, and safety vests are returned clean and all pockets emptied. Volunteers are encouraged to keep gloves and bags for future cleanups.
  • Visitors must check in at the main floor reception of the Jubilee building downtown, located at 9909 Franklin Ave. The office is open 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday (closed on Statutory Holidays). If you have any questions or concerns, please contact beautification@rmwb.ca or call 780-742-7567
