Sewer Cleaning and Inspections

A multi-year program has begun for sewer cleaning and inspections for all communities in the region

Residents and businesses in downtown Fort McMurray, Waterways, Grayling Terrace, Abasand and TaigaNova will be the first neighbourhoods to have this work completed. Residents of these areas can expect this work to take place over the next several weeks.

Uni-jet Industrial Pipe Ltd. will be completing all sewer cleaning and inspection this summer and will provide notice prior to work beginning.

Steps you can take before the work begins:

Sometimes during sewer cleaning, changes in air pressure can cause water to splash from toilets, sinks or drains. To help prevent any mess or damage, we recommend the following:

  • Keep toilet lids closed when not in use and use drain plugs in sinks and bathtubs.
  • Remove floor mats from your bathrooms and place old towels around the base of toilets.
  • If you have a float plug in your floor drain or a backwater valve, make sure it’s clean and working properly.
  • Cover basement floor drains with thick plastic (like a freezer bag) and place something heavy on top to hold it in place.

Please refer to the table below to see when this work will take place in your neighbourhood.

Frequently Asked Questions

This work is being done as part of a multi-year sewer cleaning and inspection program for all communities in the region. Sewer cleaning and inspections are done to help identify potential blockages and to monitor the structural health of pipes. Cleanings help to prevent or resolve the buildup of any materials that can block the sewer’s flow, such as roots, grease, debris or broken pipe.

The contractor has built a schedule of which neighbourhoods they plan to do when. Please refer to the schedule above to see when they plan to be in your neighbourhood. If your neighbourhood is not on the list, don't worry. Your neighbourhood may be completed in one of the years to follow. Stay tuned for updates.
