Transit FAQs

Riding Basics

How can I plan trips with RMWB Transit?
Use Transit App or Google Maps to find your best route. You can check the location of your bus and keep track of its progress while waiting for your ride.

How do I know if my bus will be late?

You can track your bus’s progress while you wait with Transit App or Google Maps. You can also visit the Transit Alerts page to find current delays, detours and bus stop closures.

How much does bus fare cost?

Cash fare is $2.25 per ride. Ticket sheets ($36 for 18 tickets) and monthly passes ($57.75 for student passes and $76 for adult passes) can be bought at the Jubilee building cashier at 9909 Franklin Avenue or partnering locations. Children under five years old and seniors who are 65 years or older ride for free. For specialized transit or rural fares, please see the fares webpage.

How can I buy bus fares?

You can purchase tickets and passes at multiple locations throughout Fort McMurray, including Jubilee building reception at 9909 Franklin Ave. Cash fares can be paid in exact change on the bus. For a full list of vendor locations or more information visit the fares webpage.
How do transfers work?
If you are paying with cash or tickets and you need to take more than one bus, ask your driver for a transfer. When boarding the next bus, show the transfer to your driver. Transfers are given to passengers paying with cash or tickets and are valid for 90 minutes.

I am a resident aged 65 or older – do I need to show any kind of Transit pass to ride on RMWB Transit for free?

No, there is no senior’s pass you need to show. If the driver asks to verify your age, any photo ID displaying your age can be used.
I left something on Transit property. Is there a Lost and Found?

Yes. If you’ve left something on the bus or at a shelter, please contact Pulse at 780-743-7000 or rmwb.ca/pulse.

Accessibility

I use a wheelchair. Can I take the bus?

Yes - standard RMWB Transit buses are equipped with wheelchair ramps and space for wheelchairs in priority seating.

What mobility devices can I bring on the bus?

You can take wheelchairs, strollers, walkers, crutches and canes onto the bus. Bikes can be stored and secured in the bike rack mounted on the front of the bus. See the Bike and Ride webpage for a step-by-step guide.

I have special mobility needs. Is there a specialized transit service I can use?

Yes, our Special Mobility Assistance Required Transportation (SMART Bus) service is available by appointment to those with mobility issues that prevent or severely restrict their use of conventional bus service, as well as seniors (65 years or older). All SMART buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps. For more information, please see our Specialized Transit webpage.

School Transit

Do school specials make all stops on the route map, or just the ones on the schedule?

The school specials will make all stops indicated on the route map.

How can I learn more about transit services for students?

Read RMWB Transit’s student guides for high school or college to learn more about Transit services, fares, safety and etiquette.

What should I remember when getting on or off the bus?

  • Stand back from the curb and take off your backpack before boarding the bus.
  • Form an orderly line when boarding your bus (front door), and let passengers exit first.
  • Make sure you pay your fare ($2.25 or one ticket) or show your bus pass to the driver.
  • Leave space for everyone; move to the back of the bus when boarding.
  • Be courteous and allow your driver to concentrate on operating the bus – please don’t move around when the bus is moving, and hold onto the handrails when standing.
  • Exit from the back door and wait for the bus to depart before crossing the street. Do NOT cross in front of the bus.

Services and Operations

My bus is often late/early. What can I do?

RMWB Transit works hard to ensure buses run according to schedule. Please keep in mind that like other vehicles, buses are affected by traffic issues, adverse weather conditions and/or construction, which may cause delays.

If you continue to have difficulties with a particular bus route, please report the specific bus route number, time and location to Pulse.

Why is my bus crowded?

During peak hours and certain school routes with high demand there may be times where passengers need to stand.  In cases where buses are regularly overcrowded, and when resources are available, we will send an overload bus to provide more capacity.

RMWB Transit is in the process of implementing the recommendations in the Transit Master Plan, which includes optimizing high-demand routes to improve the Transit experience.

Why do some bus routes stop at 7 p.m.?

Ridership demand is the primary factor in determining where transit service is implemented, and the hours that services are offered. Routes with less ridership run less often.

How does Transit make decisions about routes and services?

Changes will be coming to RMWB Transit in alignment with the Transit Master Plan.

The Transit Master Plan will guide changes and improvements to RMWB Transit to make better connections between and within Wood Buffalo communities, with fewer transfers and faster arrivals.

For more information, please visit rmwb.ca/tmp

Winter Operations

Snow is making it difficult to get to my stop/shelter. What can I do?
If snow or ice is making it difficult for you to access your bus stop, please call Pulse. Following a snowfall, crews work to clear snow from bus stop boarding areas, prioritizing the busiest routes and stops.
Why aren't all bus shelters heated?

Transit Services provides ongoing repairs, cleaning and winter maintenance to all shelter assets within the urban service area of Fort McMurray. This includes more than 200 heated bus shelters.

During the 2016 wildfire and 2020 flood, some bus shelters were damaged, resulting in the loss of power.

On a yearly basis, Transit Services evaluates the list of unpowered shelters, with ridership usage and budgetary limits in mind, to prioritize repairs. Over the last two years, 18 shelters have been repaired.

In 2024, we will continue to conduct assessments on the remaining unpowered shelters.

Please note, unpowered shelters on inactive routes will not have power restored.

Safety

What can I do if I or someone else doesn’t feel safe on the bus?

If you see inappropriate or unsafe behaviour while on board, report it to your driver.

If you can’t speak to the driver or want to report a non-emergency incident, call Pulse at 780-743-7000 and give the date, time and route, along with details of the incident.

For emergencies, always call 9-1-1.

What can I do if I don’t feel safe at a Transit stop or shelter?

If you see unsafe behaviour or conditions and want to report a non-emergency incident, call Pulse at 780-743-7000 and give the date, time and location along with details of the incident.

For emergencies, always call 9-1-1.

How can I learn more about Transit safety and etiquette?
Everyone plays a role in making buses and shelters safe and respectful for passengers and Transit staff. Follow the Transit Code and learn how to Ride the Right Way at rmwb.ca/transitsafety

What can I do to show courtesy on the bus?

  • Use headphones when listening to music.
  • Don’t wear strong-smelling perfumes, cologne, or deodorants.
  • Eating and drinking - wait until you get off the bus

What behaviour is NOT tolerated on Transit property?

  • Behaviour that threatens the safety of others or the safe operation of the bus.
  • Harassment or discrimination of any kind.
  • Vaping, smoking, drinking alcohol or using other drugs.
  • Littering - whatever you bring onto Transit property should also leave with you.
  • Excessive noise or disorderly conduct.
  • Vandalizing or creating graffiti on any transit property.
