New Transit routes and On Demand service start Friday, Aug. 22
Plan ahead and know your new route before heading out the door.
Major changes to RMWB Transit in Fort McMurray take effect tomorrow (Friday) Aug. 22.
All old transit routes and schedules are being discontinued and replaced by new ones and Transit On Demand service. Review the new Transit Network Map in Fort McMurray for an overview of the new routes and On Demand Zones.
The new Transit system is designed to make it easier, faster and more convenient to get around the community. These improvements are based on the 2023 Transit Master Plan, developed with community input and approved by Council.
New Transit routes and schedules
- Two core routes, Route 1 (Thickwood – Gregoire) and Route 2 (Timberlea – Keyano), running frequently on main roads for travel across Fort McMurray.
- Seven neighbourhood routes serve neighbourhoods during high ridership times. During off-peak hours and on weekends, most neighbourhood routes will not be available and will be replaced with Transit On Demand. The neigbourhood routes are:
How does Transit On Demand work?
RMWB Transit On Demand is a new service you can use to book a ride when neighbourhood routes aren’t available. There are three ways to book an On Demand trip:
- RMWB Transit On Demand app (available through major app stores)
- rmwb.ca/OnDemand
- Pulse at 780-743-7000
You must create an account before you can book On Demand trips. If you need help setting up an account, please contact Pulse.
Transit On Demand will pick you up at a nearby bus stop and take you to locations in the same On Demand zone or connect you to a regular route for travel across Fort McMurray. You cannot use Transit On Demand to travel to locations outside of the On Demand Zone you’re in.
2025-26 School Transit
All areas serviced last year by special school routes will continue to be serviced by school routes this year. The school routes have new route numbers and, similar to last year, all pick-up and drop-off times are based on school bell times.
Students that took a regular Transit route to school last year are reminded to review the new routes and schedules.
Review the 2025-26 Student Guide and find all school routes and regular routes that service each high school in Fort McMurray on these webpages:
Specialized Transit
Specialized Transit (formerly known as SMART Bus) will continue to provide registered users with curb-to-curb service in accessible buses as part of Transit On Demand service. Specialized Transit users will arrive on time for all their appointments and receive the same level of assistance.
Specialized Transit is now available longer every day. Users can continue to book over the phone and can now also book online and through the RMWB Transit On Demand app.
Downtown Transit Terminal closing
The Main Street Terminal downtown will be permanently closed on Aug. 22. Two new bus stops will be available on Franklin Avenue so you can still catch the bus from the same area:
- New southbound bus stop near kiyām Park.
- New northbound bus stop in front of the Bank of Montreal branch.
The downtown terminal has been closed as the new Transit system reduces the need for bus transfers and core routes travel directly along Franklin Avenue, resulting in faster service. Riders needing to make transfers may do so anywhere along Franklin Avenue where two routes intersect.
