Private Sewage Permits

Private sewage permits are required before installing your private sewage treatment system. This is a different permit from the plumbing permit required to install a plumbing system inside your home.

The permit is designed to connect you with a Safety Codes Officer early in your project to ensure your private sewage system design and operational plans meet the relevant standards. By working together during the planning stage, you can identify potential issues, make informed adjustments, and avoid costly changes or delays.

Apply

Apply for electrical permits online through E-Permitting or in person using the forms below.

Before you apply

Not sure if you're ready? Here are some questions to ask yourself before you apply.

You may apply for a homeowner permit only if:

  • You own and reside at the building (or will reside there once construction is complete).
  • You will personally be installing the sewage system.
  • You are capable of ensuring that the work is done in accordance with the Alberta Private Sewage Systems Standard of Practice.

You cannot apply for a homeowner permit if:

  • You are not personally doing the work.
  • You are not a qualified installer.

If you have no experience with sewage system installation, it's best to hire a certified installer who is
eligible to receive permits. Work done by inexperienced installers may need expensive corrections and
could be dangerous.

After you apply

Once a complete application with all required documentation is received, the processing time for a private sewage permit is three to five business days.

Work must begin within 90 days of the permit issuance. It is the permit holder’s responsibility to ensure that all required inspections are completed.

To request an inspection:

Permits remain valid for one year if work is actively progressing.

A private sewage permit will expire if:

  • Work does not begin within 90 days of issuance, or
  • No work is completed for 120 consecutive days.

Why are private sewage permits necessary?

A private sewage permit:

  • Ensures your project is reviewed and inspected for safety at key stages by certified Safety Codes Officers.
  • Provides a record that due diligence has been completed to comply with relevant codes and standards.
