An incredible amount of work was done to protect Fort McMurray and surrounding areas from wildfire MWF017 and support the approximately 6,600 community members who were evacuated and have now returned home. .
$2. 4 million in grant funding available to help downtown businesses and organizations. (Fort McMurray, AB – May 22, 2024) – On May 21, 2024, Council approved the third phase of the Downtown Revitalization Incentives Program, which includes $2. 4 million in total grant funding.

All evacuated residents may return home immediately, all remaining evacuation alerts, and State of Local Emergency lifted. (Fort McMurray, AB – May 18, 2024) – Evacuees from Abasand, Beacon Hill, Prairie Creek, and Grayling Terrace may now return home.
The Fire Ban includes the urban service area of Fort McMurray and is being implemented by the Municipality to mirror the fire ban and OHV restriction enacted within the Forest Protection Area by Alberta Wildfire. All fire permits are suspended or cancelled and no new fire permits will be issued.
Order could extend beyond May 21, but residents are encouraged to plan to be away until at least May 21. Neighbourhoods under the evacuation order issued on May 14, can expect to be evacuated until at least Tuesday, May 21.
Evacuation Order: Abasand, Beacon Hill, Prairie Creek and Grayling Terrace move to evacuation order; be prepared to be evacuated by 4 p. m. If you are not in an area under Evacuation Order, please remain in place until these other communities evacuate first, to facilitate a safe evacuation.
Continue to follow trusted sources of information for up-to-date information. At 1:30 the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) declared a State of Local Emergency (SOLE) due to wildfire activity associated with MWF-017.
