River breakup is in progress. An Evacuation Alert has been issued for Draper due to the potential of an ice jam flooding event along the Clearwater River. Water levels could impact egress and access on Garden Lane and River Bend Close. Residents in the alert area do not have to leave but should be ready to evacuate on short notice. A third load of two modular homes is heading north on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road on Friday morning, Feb. 27.
Southbound travel from Fort Chipewyan to Fort McMurray will be temporarily unavailable from 12:01 a.m. to 10 a.m. Northbound drivers should also expect delays during this time.
Shootout on the Snye is cancelled due to extreme cold and severe wind chill. Several teams have already cancelled, significantly impacting scheduling and team availability for the tournament. The current forecasted temperatures are colder than the safety threshold of –28 degrees Celsius. Players who were registered as of Feb. 20 will be refunded their registration fees next week.
This event is beloved by many and this decision was not made easily. The safety of players, volunteers, referees, and staff is the top priority. Don’t worry, the ice rinks won’t go to waste; leisure skating is still able to be booked at your own discretion.

A wide load of two modular homes is heading north on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road on Friday morning, Feb. 13.
The road will be closed to southbound traffic from midnight to 10 a.m., and northbound drivers should also expect delays during this time.
Warm weather means a daytime load limit of 5,000 kg will be in effect on Wednesday, Feb. 4 for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road and the La Loche Winter Trail. This weight restriction is needed to limit damage to the roads.
Traffic will be restricted to light vehicles only (5,000 kg) from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday. The limit will go back to 45,000 kg after 10 p.m. for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road and 27,500 kg for the La Loche Winter Trail.
After a decade shaped by challenges and resilience, the region is growing again for the first time in 10 years. Census 2025 reported a total population of 107,740, a 1.6 per cent increase from 2021.

WinterPLAY is inviting community members to participate in fundraising opportunities and is seeking referees for the Shootout in the Snye pond hockey tournament.
The WinterCHALET heated tent is available for local commercial or social profit organizations to provide food sales during WinterPLAY. Complete an application by Feb. 9.

The Shootout on the Snye is part of the annual WinterPLAY event, which is one of the biggest community events of the year! There will be all kinds of free family-friendly activities, including fireworks, ice sculptures, horse drawn wagon rides, cultural programming and more!
